THE READER’S FIELD GUIDE

What do we know?
How do we know it?

A map, a photograph and a chemical measurement answer different questions. Use the label, date and original source together.

These are descriptions of evidence, not a ranking of quality. One study can contain several types. “Observed” can include satellite observations; “assessed” or “estimated” does not automatically mean a validated contaminant model.

Five ways to describe the evidence.

Measured

An instrument or laboratory analysis reports an observation. Check the sample, method, date and detection limit.

Detection alone does not establish a wartime source, transport or health risk.

Reported

A named source describes an incident, observation or assessment. Read its methods and attribution.

A source-linked report is not automatically independently verified.

Modeled

A calculation uses inputs and assumptions to estimate a condition or outcome.

An estimate is not a field measurement; validation and uncertainty matter.

Plausible pathway

A mechanism could connect a source to an environmental receptor.

Possibility does not establish that transport or exposure occurred at a place.

Unknown

The evidence needed to answer this question is unavailable or not loaded here.

A blank map or missing measurement does not mean safe or unaffected.

Labels apply to individual claims, so a page may contain several kinds of evidence. “Source-reported” means this site summarizes another source’s finding. Recommended actions are proposals, not observations.

Three dates worth separating.

Observation period

When the event, imagery or sampling occurred. A missing observation date remains unknown.

Publication date

When the source released its findings. It may describe much earlier conditions.

Editorial review

When this site checked its presentation. A new review date does not make the underlying evidence current.

Review recordWhat was checked and what remains unresolved

EDITORIAL REVIEW / 28 OCTOBER 2026

Consistent support links, clearer evidence and dated prices.

Corrected outdated donation notices on Iwo Jima and in the site directory, consolidated the evidence definitions, and aligned directory descriptions with the current tools. Added page-specific social previews. AAA regular-gasoline prices were checked for all 50 states, D.C. and the separately published national average dated 28 October 2026.

Correction, 29 October 2026: the earlier statement that no recurring checks were scheduled was incorrect. The separate Conflict Updater automation is enabled for daily checks around 8 a.m. America/Chicago time. Its 29 October run recorded 28 completed reviews, two source-verification failures and two published updates. Scheduling, successful review and the dates of underlying evidence are distinct. This review does not refresh every conflict source, resolve research-record gaps or establish mobile usability.

READER CLARITY UPDATE / 27 OCTOBER 2026

Findings first, evidence within reach.

The conflict atlas now opens each entry with its environmental finding, reported weapons and unresolved question, drawn from the existing records. Evidence labels distinguish source-reported observations, estimates, assessments and measurements. Follow the Water adds illustrative investigation layers. The Iwo Jima charts reproduce six elements from the three supplied AVG columns separately from published comparisons and fragment records; no new uncertainty estimates or source attribution are inferred.

This is a presentation update, not a new review of all external sources. Research dates and source periods remain unchanged.

EDITORIAL REVIEW / 27 OCTOBER 2026

Navigation, labels and price data.

This review corrected the distinction between the Gaza environmental evidence page, spatial screening prototype and separate modeled research map; repaired the research-map link; consolidated the Gaza section menu; and added the research hub and LEAD model to the sitemap. Local page and anchor checks were run. Separately, the gas-price update checked AAA’s 27 October 2026 national regular-gasoline average and all 50 state averages plus Washington, D.C. Price dates are separate from the explainer’s review date and tax-reference dates.

This is a scoped editorial and data-maintenance record, not a claim that every external source, scientific result or mobile interaction was independently verified. Earlier review entries remain below.

EDITORIAL REVIEW / 23 OCTOBER 2026

What this update checked.

We checked local pages, assets, navigation targets, collection counts and cross-page descriptions. This pass aligned the Nevada atlas directory and sitemap, Iwo Jima record scope, money-page labels and image-provenance entries. Selected CBO budget references were also checked. This is not independent reanalysis or verification of every external source; the separately hosted Evidence Explorer was not audited.

Reading the main collections and their remaining limitations
CollectionEvidence & datesWhat remains limited
Conflict atlasSelected reporting; each brief has its own source period.Selected coverage, not a live or exhaustive inventory. Weapon reports do not establish chemical contamination.
Historical atlasUCDP/PRIO v26.1; recorded activity 1946–2025.Country reference points are not battle locations; no 2026 observations.
Gaza spatial screening8 July 2025 damage imagery; well observation date unknown.Proximity comparison with mismatched dates, not a contamination forecast.
Water storySeptember 2025 UNEP assessment; schematic pathways. No modeled local flow, concentration or exposure outcome.
Money & taxesFY2025 actual outlays and a separate FY2026 DoD request.Illustrative allocation, not traced personal payments. Later environmental costs are not calculated.
Gaza & Nevada research mapsResearch images with provenance limitations.Original model inputs, dataset references or mapping dates still need documentation. Do not use as verified contamination surfaces.
Nevada Nuclear Testing Atlas1,021 DOE historical detonation records with a source-coordinate audit. Two internal source-coordinate conflicts remain flagged. Inventory agreement is not independent ground validation or measured radiation.
Iwo Jima researchPublished 2024/2025 study plus author-supplied averaged XRF summaries and 38 numbered fragment records, displayed separately.Relationships and overlap among analytical records remain unresolved. Sample measurements do not map island-wide conditions or independently prove attribution.
Reading roomScholarly records checked 20 October; source summaries linked 21 October 2026.Curated collection, not an exhaustive review or the full Evidence Explorer corpus.

OPEN RECORDS / WHAT WOULD RESOLVE THEM

Keep an unanswered question visible.

Iwo Jima dataset relationships
Needed: original sample and portion IDs, scan dates, triplicate group membership and nondetect treatment. Until these agree, the published study, supplied averages and fragment readings are not combined. Read the record distinctions ↗
Image attribution
Needed: original source or archive identifier, creator, capture date and reuse permission or license. A supplied copy does not resolve those fields. See image-by-image provenance ↗
Nevada: Barbel and Turnstone coordinates
The source publication contains conflicting chronological and alphabetical coordinates. The atlas retains the chronological entries with flags; neither location is marked as reconciled. An independent authoritative location record is needed. Inspect the coordinate audit (CSV) ↗
Gaza well observation dates
The retrieved public layer does not supply an observation date. Retrieval and item-modified dates cannot establish when wells existed or operated. A dated inventory or provider clarification is needed. Read the map’s date limits ↗

These gaps limit interpretation; an editorial update does not resolve them. Corrections should include the underlying record so readers can follow the change.
